How Much Longer for Devil May Cry? Capcom Signals a Revival for Older IPs

According to Capcom's latest earnings report, the company is once again putting a cluster of legacy series in the spotlight, including Devil May Cry, Mega Man, Onimusha, Ace Attorney, Okami, and Dragon's Dogma, while saying it will continue increasing investment in sequels, remakes, and ports. The key point is not a formal slate announcement. It is that Capcom chose to group these older IP together in an official financial document, a move that naturally raises expectations for future entries in franchises like Devil May Cry, Dead Rising, and Dragon's Dogma.

If you read this report as a roadmap, Capcom looks less like a publisher falling back on nostalgia and more like one returning to unfinished business from a position of strength. The company says it has now delivered 13 consecutive years of operating profit growth and 11 straight years of profit growth above 10%. That matters because it suggests this is not reactive brand-mining. It is a deliberate attempt to move older series back toward the center while the business is stable and profitable. For players, that kind of signal carries more weight than a vague "stay tuned," because language in an earnings report usually points to real resource allocation.

More importantly, Capcom has not been short on recent hits. The report says much of its recent success came from the performance of Pragmata, Resident Evil Requiem, and Monster Hunter Wilds. On top of that, Dragon's Dogma 2, which launched in 2024, has already sold more than 4 million copies during the year. That is the comfortable phase for any big publisher: the new releases are working, which creates room to reopen long-dormant doors.

Among the named series, Devil May Cry may be the one carrying the most mixed emotions from fans. Its last mainline entry was Devil May Cry 5 in 2019. Since then, the brand has only seen side material, including a Special Edition, the mobile game Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat, and a Netflix anime adaptation. For many players, that has made it one of Capcom's most visibly neglected marquee series in recent years. By comparison, Dragon's Dogma has already reestablished itself through Dragon's Dogma 2, while Okami 2 was formally announced at The Game Awards 2024, or TGA 2024, with Hideki Kamiya leading development.

The gaps are even more striking elsewhere. Dead Rising and Ace Attorney both received remastered releases in 2024, but their last mainline sequels both date back to 2016. Onimusha has been dormant even longer, with its last proper entry released in 2006. As for Mega Man, the series has not had a new mainline sequel since 2018, though Capcom has already confirmed that Mega Man: Dual Override will launch in 2027. At minimum, that shows the company is not merely padding out its report with familiar names.

That is also what makes this update worth watching. Capcom did not formally announce new projects for these series, but it still chose to list them together. For a company whose commercial rhythm is clearly working, that usually does not read like a throwaway mention. It reads more like early signaling to the market, investors, and players all at once. And when Capcom explicitly says it will continue putting more resources into sequels, remakes, and ports, the likely revival paths for these older IP are already visible. The only missing detail is which door it opens first.

From a player perspective, the practical takeaway is straightforward. In the short term, it makes more sense to focus on the series that already have a clear destination, such as Okami 2, Mega Man: Dual Override, and the still-active Dragon's Dogma 2. For names like Devil May Cry, Onimusha, and Ace Attorney, this is the moment to keep watching, not to spend all your hype in advance. What Capcom has offered here is not a release calendar. It is a row of old save slots lit back up. Which one gets loaded first is the next move that could really push community discussion forward.
