Is This Shot in *Euphoria 3* Really Necessary? The Controversy Has Already Exploded

I'd give it a 6. Because it’s very good at generating buzz, but this controversy really has crossed the patience threshold for quite a few viewers. For an old viewer like me who has watched all kinds of “adult packaging” since the PS1 era, this kind of move isn’t new. The issue was never whether they dare to shoot it, but whether what they shoot actually serves a purpose.

Recently, a new clip from Season 3 of HBO’s Euphoria spread across social platforms, instantly sending discussion through the roof. In the clip, Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, appears with a pacifier in her mouth and her legs spread, clearly performing an “adult baby” setup. The comment section split on the spot: some found the scene awkward and disgusting, while others defended the actress, arguing that it’s simply part of the character’s job.

To put it bluntly, what viewers are arguing about now isn’t the level of explicitness, but necessity. If you’re shooting it to show a character’s breakdown, fractured relationships, or identity alienation, then sure, there’s something to discuss. But if it’s just using a provocative shot as a trailer hook, then it’s like forcing QTEs into an old game—aside from breaking the rhythm, all it leaves behind is a reaction of “are you serious?”

According to the official trailer and surrounding promo materials already released, Season 3’s timeline will jump directly to the fifth year after high school graduation. In this season, Cassie and Nate are already engaged, but their relationship starts running into trouble because she’s creating OnlyFans-style adult content. Even more outrageous, the plot will have her team up with Maddy, whom she fell out with long ago, and become her filming partner. The push and pull among these three will clearly be the core selling point of the new season.

That said, Euphoria was never a work that took the conservative route to begin with. It has always liked putting desire, shame, and performativity front and center, and this newly revealed look has also been described as part of Cassie’s adult-content-creation storyline. Taken on its own, the setup isn’t entirely without groundwork. It’s just that the shot they chose is a little too good at “starting wars,” so it naturally yanks the audience’s attention away from character conflict and straight toward sensory provocation.

What I care more about is that they don’t reduce Cassie to a mere trending-topic tool. If a character has to rely on increasingly exaggerated looks every time just to maintain relevance, then she’s no different from those hollow sexy character designs from the old console era—striking at first glance, but sounding empty the moment you look back. On the other hand, if this season really can solidly write the control, dependency, and mutual exploitation between her, Nate, and Maddy, then this controversial clip may still end up justifying itself.

Judging from community reactions, it’s basically two camps firing at each other right now. One side questions, “What is the storytelling necessity of this?” while the other feels people shouldn’t fixate only on their discomfort, because the new season’s return is worth celebrating in itself. For casual viewers, my advice is simple: don’t rush to take sides—wait for the full episode. Trailers have always been best at editing, just like those demo videos from the E3 era: they can cut a half-finished product to look like a masterpiece, or edit a perfectly normal plotline into a giant public-cringe disaster.

If Season 3 ultimately just keeps trading explicitness for traffic, then all it will really have left is its talent for trending. But if it really can clearly explain how these characters have changed after five years, and twist the Cassie-Nate-Maddy storyline into a rope tight enough to choke, then this round of controversy will be, at most, that loudest loading screen before the servers go live.
