Fairgames Alpha Test Flops as Sony's Bet Looks Shaky
Haven Studios' Fairgames has hit a rough patch during its Alpha testing phase, with players delivering harsh criticism of the PS5 live-service shooter's core mechanics. The game, controversial since its 2023 reveal, ran a closed test under the codename Espresso—and the feedback hasn't been kind.

Insider Tom Henderson confirmed he's seen both gameplay footage and player responses, and the outlook isn't promising. Testers consistently complained about stiff movement, uninspired class design, and lackluster gunplay. Some outlets have gone further, claiming the reception is worse than Concord—Sony's live-service flop that was pulled from sale shortly after launch. The art direction has also shifted from the original concept toward a grittier, more realistic aesthetic reminiscent of Call of Duty or The Division, but that pivot hasn't won players over.

The gameplay loop centers on extraction shooter mechanics: four teams of three infiltrate vaults, grab loot, and fight their way out. On paper it sounds solid, but there's a disconnect between the game's "Robin Hood heist" branding and the reality of teams slaughtering each other for resources. The narrative framing—steal from the rich, give to the poor—clashes with the actual experience of gunning down rival squads.
Alpha tests exist to surface problems, so negative feedback doesn't seal a game's fate. But compared to other live-service titles at similar stages, Fairgames is in a tougher spot. Sony has stumbled repeatedly in this space, and Haven Studios has a narrow window to address fundamental design issues. If the movement, class balance, and thematic coherence don't improve significantly in the coming months, this could become another cautionary tale in Sony's live-service ambitions.
