Final Fantasy 14 on Switch 2 locks at 30fps with town drops sparking player backlash
Final Fantasy XIV's Switch 2 announcement during Nintendo's reveal event should have sparked celebration, but producer Naoki Yoshida's performance target—30 frames per second with potential drops in crowded towns—has cooled player excitement considerably.

Yoshida acknowledged in interviews that the team is working hard to optimize the NS2 version's performance. He specifically addressed the town scenario challenge: "When the screen needs to render many player characters simultaneously, you may see frame rate drops, but we can still maintain a stable 30 frames per second." The statement reads like preemptive damage control while exposing the NS2 hardware's limitations.

For a console launching in 2026, a 30fps target feels conservative. Final Fantasy XIV already runs at 60fps or higher on PS5 and high-end PCs, yet NS2—Nintendo's next-generation hardware—can barely match last-gen performance levels. Social media reactions have been blunt: "Still talking about 30fps targets in 2026? This hardware seems underwhelming," with others questioning whether NS2's actual capabilities match the marketing hype.

From a player experience standpoint, 30fps falls short for MMORPGs requiring precise inputs, especially during high-difficulty raids and PVP combat where low frame rates directly impact responsiveness and combat feel. The flip side: portable access to Eorzea anytime, anywhere holds genuine appeal for commuters and mobile players. The real question is whether you'll trade visual fluidity for portability—and that's ultimately what the NS2 version of Final Fantasy XIV is selling.
