Final Fantasy 7 Revelation heads to Gamescom with a potential release date reveal.

Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy VII: Revelation will headline Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25 at 11:00 AM Pacific Time — that's August 26 at 2:00 AM Beijing Time (UTC+8) — with game director Naoki Hamaguchi presenting new footage and major announcements in person. The release date for the final chapter of the Remake trilogy remains officially unannounced, and this showcase is widely expected to change that.

The best part of any open world isn't what the game points you toward — it's what it doesn't. Finding an unmarked path behind a climbable wall that leads to top-tier materia, no objective marker, no quest log entry — that's what makes a world worth exploring. Not square mileage.

So the invisible walls in the previous game were a real frustration. The map was huge, but the moment you tried to leave the main path in the wilds, you'd hit a barrier that pushed you back. Lots of map, not much freedom.

When Hamaguchi takes the stage on August 26, the release date will be the obvious headline. But what I'll actually be watching for is how open the world looks in the live demo footage. If they've built a seamless sandbox where you can wander off the critical path and find things nobody flagged for you — that's a day-one purchase.
