Final Fantasy XIV Hits Switch 2 with 50% Off for Returning Subscribers
Final Fantasy XIV Hits Switch 2 in August 2026 With 50% Subscription Discount
Square Enix announced at last weekend's FINAL FANTASY XIV Fan Festival 2026 that the game launches on Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026, preceded by a month-long free trial requiring no subscription to explore Eorzea. That's a decent entry offer.

The cross-platform subscription policy stands out most. Players already subscribed on PC or PS5 get 50% off the monthly fee when they purchase the Switch 2 version. It's not a unified subscription—you still pay separately—but for anyone wanting to clear dailies during commutes, that discount adds up. Square Enix is clearly betting on portable play here, and given FF14's absurd daily task load, being able to log in anywhere matters for dedicated players.

Worth noting: the Switch 2 version doesn't require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription for online play, which beats most other online games on the platform. Compare that to Monster Hunter titles that demand the extra membership—Square Enix is being generous here. This actually lowers the barrier for new players: free trial period plus no NSO requirement means near-zero cost to try the game.

From an exploration standpoint, FF14's world density remains an MMO benchmark, with every map packed with side quests and hidden content. Being able to carry that world around is tempting for completionists. The only concern is whether Switch 2 can handle crowded areas—even PCs struggle in hubs like Limsa Lominsa. But either way, I'll likely push my PS5 progress to a stopping point before August 2026, then experience this continent again on handheld.
