Fortune's Run developer returns from prison, resumes work after 15-month hiatus

A developer went to prison, and the game stopped updating for 15 months—sounds like a joke, but Fortune's Run players lived through it. The good news: core developer Dizzie recently got paroled, and the game's finally moving again.

What is Fortune's Run? Retro boomer shooter meets immersive sim, dystopian sci-fi setting, 91% positive on Steam. After launching into Early Access in September 2023, it showed promise—until Dizzie disappeared on a three-year sentence. The other co-developer, Arachne, had already left Team Fortune, leaving the project essentially frozen.

This exposes how fragile indie development really is. AAA studios have dozens or hundreds on a team; losing one programmer means delays at worst. Small teams lose a core member, and the entire project goes into stasis. That Dizzie got into a halfway house and was allowed computer access is genuinely fortunate.

The team's plan: push one content update within six months, target the 1.0 release in a year. That timeline's actually conservative, but given the developer's still on parole, consistent output is already an achievement. Compared to indie games that delay three to five years, this promise feels more credible.

Player reactions are mixed. Some say "finally," others worry whether the developer can recover his form. I think anyone willing to keep making games under those circumstances genuinely loves the project. As for quality, the update in six months will answer that.

If you like Deus Ex-style shooters with high freedom and don't mind retro visuals, Fortune's Run deserves attention. Buying the Early Access version now supports the restart and lets you witness an unusual development story. Just don't push too hard for updates—the guy just got out.
