Halo 2 and Halo 3 remakes confirmed, built on Unreal Engine 5
343 Industries announced on May 3rd that Halo 2 and Halo 3 remakes are entering active development on Unreal Engine 5, both currently in early stages.

The timeline moves faster than expected. Since 343 took over the franchise, remakes have topped community wishlists—Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and Halo 2 Anniversary already proved the commercial case for refreshing these classics. The Unreal 5 choice matters: Master Chief could finally get Nanite geometry and Lumen lighting, which would transform Halo 3's Ark levels under full global illumination.

"Early stages" warrants caution. Mass Effect 5 has drip-fed breadcrumbs through annual N7 Day updates since its 2020 reveal—343 could follow the same glacial pace. The upside: they're not hiding behind vague promises. Admitting they're heads-down on development with no bandwidth for progress updates beats projects that drop annual CG trailers with zero gameplay.

Recent launches provide context. Manor Lords hit Steam at 48% positive after release, with developer Bleakmill pushing two patches that barely moved sentiment. 343's shift to Unreal 5 over their Slipspace engine sidesteps technical debt—Halo Infinite's engine struggles remain fresh in memory.
Series veterans can start budgeting, but hold off on preorders. Wait for actual gameplay footage before committing. The 2026-2030 window leaves room for patience. Master Chief deserves a remake that honors his legacy, not another launch that needs day-one patches.
