God of War: Laufey Reveals Norse Myth From Laufey's Perspective
Santa Monica Studio revealed God of War: Laufey at the PlayStation State of Play, dropping a 20-minute gameplay demo that immediately sparked debate among series veterans. Creative Director Cory Balrog was quick to clarify the project's scope—this isn't a prequel. The game slots directly into the series timeline, picking up right after the opening of God of War (2018), specifically the moment Laufey's cremation ceremony concludes.
As someone who's 100% completed both God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarök, seeing Laufey finally get her own stage feels long overdue. In the Norse saga, her screen time was brutally thin—so sparse that every Giant's Log entry bearing her name felt like a small bonus. Having a dedicated title to fill that narrative gap hits different, much like when a major Final Fantasy character finally gets their own story thread.
That said, the God of War series doesn't typically lean on collection-driven loops like JRPGs. Hidden content tends to live in challenge arenas and side quests rather than collectible indexes. Still, Balrog's comment—"we want to tell you what Laufey experienced after that funeral"—lands as genuine intrigue. That kind of narrative悬念 (narrative suspense) is exactly what hidden lore threads do best.
The timeline placement is worth noting: it directly corresponds to God of War 4's opening, which means Atreus will likely appear in the story. The father-son dynamic already has a complete arc in the mainline games, but revisiting those events through Laufey's perspective—particularly her unique identity as a jotun—promises depth that goes beyond surface-level lore.
For series veterans and lore hunters, God of War: Laufey deserves attention. New players should probably backlog God of War (2018) first; that's where this story truly begins.
The showcase also featured announcements for Kemuri, ILL, Silent Hill: Townfall, Control: Resonance, and Until Dawn 2, but Laufey dominated the conversation—primarily because of what the title implies.
