Unity Locks Out China Region! Why Did "Buckshot Roulette" Switch Engines?

When the screen dimmed, a red glow spread across the corner of the desk like blood. I instinctively held my breath, as if I were about to be dragged into a roulette game filled with the scent of gun oil. This sense of oppression didn't come from the game itself, but from a cold front approaching in the real world. The deadline at the end of March was like a sudden frost; Unity announced it would stop providing access to the Asset Store for Chinese developers.

Returning to the game itself, the choice of engine often determines how much breathing room creators have. Last year, Unity already stopped providing Unity 6 and subsequent versions to Chinese developers. The Tuanjie Engine might take over the business, but indie games are hit the hardest. Yet that green Godot icon has sprouted anew in the cracks, with market share rising from 0.9% in 2020 to 7.1% in 2025.

However, beyond the visuals, cost is the straw that breaks the camel's back. Unity developers with annual revenue exceeding $200,000 need to pay a seat fee of $2,310 per person per year, whereas the Godot engine is free and open-source. "Free" sounds like empty words, but in the current market environment, it is not that simple. In the 2025 Gamejam, games made with the Godot engine accounted for 39%, second only to Unity; developers have voted with their feet to show their trust.

My criterion for evaluating games is whether I want to live inside them; the same goes for engine communities. Godot supports 2D and small-to-medium scale 3D projects; although it lacks console platform support, it offers a haven for small and medium-sized teams. It was like seeing the twilight light hit the ruins; I stood there for a long time before I was willing to move forward. Perhaps this transformation will allow indie games to bloom anew upon the ruins.
