Halo: Combat Evolved AnniversaryFetching priceHalo Combat Evolved leaks are accelerating and a PS5 debut may be next
According to a report from foreign media, Halo: Combat Evolved is set to appear at this Sunday’s Xbox showcase, and several details have already surfaced, including pre-order bonuses, premium edition content, and some new screenshots. The leaked images were later taken down, but not before they pointed to what this project appears to be: a return to the original Halo campaign with a more modern take.
The clearest nostalgia play in the leak is the 2001 throwback content. The pre-order bonuses reportedly include the classic 2001 Mark V Master Chief armor skin, the classic 2001 MA5B assault rifle skin, plus Gilded Onyx armor and Gilded Onyx assault rifle cosmetics. It's a familiar play, and usually an effective one: hook longtime players with old-school Halo iconography, then use a modernized campaign remake to reach a wider audience.
More importantly, Halo: Combat Evolved does not appear to be a simple texture-upgrade pass on the first game. Based on the leaked information, it is described as a full rebuild and reinterpretation of the original Halo campaign, with modern upgrades to both the gameplay and presentation. For an FPS remembered for its gunfeel, combat rhythm, and encounter design, that is a meaningful distinction. On paper, the goal sounds less like a straight nostalgia play and more like an attempt to bring those old levels closer to modern shooter expectations. The leaked environment shots also suggest a clear step up in lighting, scene density, and overall scene detail.

The bigger talking point, though, is the platform move. Halo: Combat Evolved is said to be the first mainline Halo game to launch on PS5, and that shift may matter almost as much as the game itself. For years, Halo functioned as one of Xbox’s signature properties. If that report is accurate, it is not just a release decision for a single title, but a fairly direct sign that Xbox’s first-party publishing strategy is continuing to expand outward. For PS5 players, this would be the first chance to approach Halo’s core campaign through an official mainline entry. For longtime Xbox players, the obvious question is how much exclusive value is really left.

From an early buying perspective, the takeaway is simple. If all you care about is the campaign itself, there is no reason yet to rush into the premium edition, because the only known extras are additional armor and weapon skins. The appeal there is clearly the extra cosmetics, not core content. On the other hand, if you are an old-school Halo fan, especially someone who still has a soft spot for the Mark V and MA5B silhouettes, these pre-order bonuses are aimed directly at you.
As for the newly leaked screenshots and the images that were later removed, they still aren't a substitute for a proper official reveal. Whether this remake really lands will depend on how much actual gameplay Microsoft shows at this Sunday’s Xbox showcase.
