Final Fantasy 7’s new entry sparks debate, not a remake

Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is set for spring 2027, and Square Enix will launch it simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC. In interviews with Game Informer and Bloomberg, series director Naoki Hamaguchi said his next game will not be another remake, but a “large-scale RPG.”
That is easier to understand when you look at what he is focused on now. Hamaguchi says he is 100% focused on finishing Rebirth and making sure the trilogy ends in the best possible shape. He has also already cleared the game 40 times, using those runs to check pacing, combat, and overall polish. The number sounds high, but the stakes are obvious: this is Final Fantasy VII, and the last chapter has to end well.
His comments on Final Fantasy VI point in the same direction. He did not completely rule out a remake, but said it might be better handled by a different creator. In other words, it does not sound close to happening. For longtime JRPG fans, that may be disappointing, but it also makes Hamaguchi’s next move easier to read.
He said that could mean a few different paths. Hamaguchi may try an AA-scale project, a new mainline Final Fantasy, or an all-new AAA IP. Whatever comes next, Rebirth still comes first, and Square Enix is treating the trilogy as a long-term priority.
For players, the important part is simple: Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth arrives in spring 2027 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC, with no timed-exclusive gap this time. The key takeaway is that Rebirth is still the priority, while Hamaguchi’s next project remains open.
