Is the *Hyperkin* Xbox controller remake worth it? Nostalgia is back for veteran players.

The first time I saw that “big chunky” original Xbox controller, it felt a lot like the first time I held the boxed manual for The Legend of Sword and Fairy back in the day—bulky, yet carrying a bit of the era’s sharp edge. It wasn’t the refined ergonomic feel that’s popular now, but a design language that was direct, bold, and instantly recognizable. For veteran players, what makes this kind of reissue product truly moving has never been just whether it works, but whether it can rekindle that feeling from memory.

This time, HYPERKIN has released an officially licensed reissue wired controller called the “DuchesS Wired Controller.” Overall, it closely recreates the classic shape of the original Xbox controller. That highly recognizable oversized LOGO is still front and center, and the ABXY buttons retain their retro layout. As for color options, it comes in black and white, making it the kind of product that clearly aims straight for nostalgia at first glance.

Back to the controller itself—this reissue isn’t just a shell made to sell memories. It uses high-quality thumbsticks that are wear-resistant and anti-drift, and it also adds the modern features players care about, like a 3.5mm headphone jack and a share button, making screenshots and video capture much more convenient. The connector has also been updated with the times to USB-C, and it supports Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11 PC. In that respect, it feels more sincere than many “retro peripherals”—at the very least, it’s not just something meant to sit on a shelf looking pretty.

Beyond nostalgia, what everyone really cares about most is whether it’s worth the price. It costs 7480 yen including tax, about RMB 320. For an officially licensed reissue product, that’s not cheap, but it’s not outrageous either. If you’re just looking for a daily-driver controller, there are quite a few options in this price range. Judging purely by feel and features, it may not be the best value for money. But if you already have a deep attachment to the original Xbox design, then it’s like a long-lost old weapon from a wuxia tale—not necessarily the sharpest, but one that carries its own weight.

But looking at it calmly, the target audience for this kind of product is actually very clear. The first group is veteran players who lived through the original Xbox era—they’re buying a ticket back to their memories. The second group is collectors who love classic peripherals and care about official licensing and faithfulness to the original. Only the third group consists of new users who want to experience a retro design on PC or current-generation Xbox. For the latter two groups, modern touches like USB-C, a headphone jack, and a share button really do keep it from becoming the kind of thing that’s “only good for taking photos and posting on social media.”

My buying advice is also very straightforward: if you don’t have any special emotional attachment to the original Xbox and just want a stable, durable wired controller, then it’s worth comparing more products in the same price range. But if seeing that oversized LOGO instantly brings back the atmosphere of old-school console gaming halls, then this reissue really does have a bit of that “classic domestic wuxia IP coming back to life” feeling. It’s not a revolutionary new product, but at least it’s not trying to get by on just the shell. These days, the biggest risk with nostalgia-driven products is failing to live up to the sentiment. Being able to stitch together a retro look with modern practicality already makes this a fairly respectable answer within its category.
