Indie dev earned $1.09M from 9 games by focusing on long-term support over quick launches
Code Monkey, a Steam developer, released revenue data for his nine games: $1.09 million total. Game Corp DX led with $250,000, Blueprint Tycoon followed at $200,000, and the remaining titles earned between $10,000 and $100,000 each.

The standout isn't the top earners—it's Survivor Squad, a game over a decade old still generating monthly income. That's the survival model indie developers should study: not betting everything on one breakout, but building a portfolio that compounds returns over time.
Chinese indie games have produced hits, but sustained operation remains rare. Teams often take their first windfall and rush into the next project, leaving the original unmaintained while the new one stumbles. Code Monkey's approach is straightforward—spread revenue across multiple titles, keep updating individual games. That beats chasing trends or gambling on viral success.
The reality check: $1.09 million across nine games over a decade averages $10,000-$20,000 per game annually. For a solo full-time developer, that's subsistence income. Supporting a team is out of the question. Code Monkey now teaches game development—a signal that game revenue alone can't sustain long-term creation.
Chinese indie developers need more than passion—they need to run the numbers. Steam offers opportunity, but not everyone becomes the next The Scroll of Taiwu or Dyson Sphere Program. Diversify with multiple titles, treat older games as long-term assets requiring maintenance. That's the path to survival. No martial arts master in the novels achieved mastery without decades of disciplined practice.
