At an Xbox showcase held at 1 a.m., a new multiplayer game called JOIN US made its debut. From what Xbox has shared so far, it is a 1-4 player co-op, action-heavy, open-world survival game coming to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC, with support for Xbox Play Anywhere and a day-one launch in Xbox Game Pass.
Its clearest hook is the mix of post-apocalyptic survival and cult management. Recruiting followers, defining doctrine, and building up a camp gives it a more distinct angle than the usual tree-chopping, ore-mining, zombie-surviving routine. The closest reference is Cult of the Lamb reworked as a co-op survival game, only here, the dark-comedy chaos is built for up to four players instead of a solo run.

Xbox is also pitching it as more than a builder or management sim. JOIN US is being framed as an "action-heavy" open-world survival game, which suggests a faster pace rather than a slow, farming-first loop. If that balance works, it could land somewhere between the co-op friction of Don't Starve Together and Project Zomboid, with a more overtly absurd streak.

So far, players appear to be able to create their own doomsday cult around a clear core loop: recruit people, build a camp, set the rules, and fight enemies. The real question is whether that weird premise has mechanical depth. If different belief paths affect resource distribution, combat rewards, or NPC behavior, that could give the system real weight. If it only amounts to flavor text, that would be a missed opportunity.

The release setup matters too. Launching straight into Xbox Game Pass and supporting Xbox Play Anywhere is especially valuable for a multiplayer game. It lowers the barrier to getting friends in and makes switching between console and PC much easier. For a game that lives or dies on co-op, the size of the early player pool may matter more than how exciting the trailer looks.

The catch is that everything confirmed so far is still pretty high-level. There is still no deeper read on the development team or the finer details of its systems. For a project with this kind of indie bent, the two things worth watching are whether co-op roles have enough variety and whether the routine starts to wear out the novelty. If later gameplay proves that recruiting, building, and combat genuinely interlock, JOIN US could become more than a good pitch. It could be the kind of game that actually keeps people around.
The takeaway is simple. If you already have XGP, this is exactly the kind of day-one multiplayer release worth trying early with friends. If you care more about solo immersion, it makes more sense to wait for additional gameplay and system details. The theme is strange enough to stand out, and the design clearly has potential, but whether JOIN US can turn a strong concept into a game with staying power will depend on what future reveals actually show.
