Will *Mafia* Be Making a Comeback Again? Hold Off on Popping the Champagne Just Yet

I'd give it a seven. Because the news sounds pleasing enough, but for now it's still just a rumor, and the day we can actually get our hands on the disc case is probably still as far away as Final Fantasy XIII was before the PS3 launch. Recently, foreign outlet playground mentioned that leaks about a future new project in the Mafia series have been gaining traction online, with the core claim being that Hangar 13 and Take-Two Interactive have already approved development. But here’s the question: does approving development mean we’ll be playing it soon? These days even official announcements can get delayed, let alone something that hasn’t even been officially announced yet.

At the moment, there are two directions that have leaked out: one is a full remake of Mafia 2, and the other is a proper sequel to Mafia: The Old Country. The source is an actress who voiced “Isabella Torrisi,” and she mentioned in 2025 that a new entry in the series had already been approved. To put it bluntly, this kind of news isn’t baseless, but it’s also nowhere near solid enough to justify pre-ordering a collector’s edition. The official side still hasn’t confirmed anything, and that has to be stated first and foremost, otherwise people will start treating rumors like gospel again.

The divide in the player community is actually pretty real. Some people are hoping for a Mafia 2 remake—and not the lazy kind that just swaps out textures, but one that restores the cut content from back in the day, such as a more complete choice system, multiple endings, and a free mode after finishing the game. I can understand that demand. Veteran players tend to have a bit of an obsession with Mafia 2; the game had that same kind of energy as those late-PS2-era titles that were bursting with ambition but short on resources. The framework was genuinely excellent, and it’s a real shame the rest never fully grew around it.

That said, some people are already tired of the remake craze. They’d rather see a brand-new story—say, moving the setting to the American West Coast in the 1980s and continuing with the mafia theme, but without endlessly patching up the same old script. That viewpoint isn’t wrong either. After all, today’s market has no shortage of “safe nostalgia plays”; what it lacks are new titles bold enough to push forward. When an old IP keeps looking backward, it can easily end up like certain open-world series: the maps get bigger and bigger, while the soul starts feeling more and more like a checklist of missions.

If industry speculation is accurate, the project will probably still need around three more years of development, and if all goes smoothly, it may not release until around 2028. Rumor also has it that it will launch on cross-generation console platforms. The moment I see the words “cross-generation,” alarm bells start ringing in my head. It’s not that it can’t be done, but once a lot of games try to cater to both sides, they often end up serving neither very well—just like that batch of titles that spanned both PS3 and PS4 back in the day. They looked exciting on the surface, but in practice they always felt like they were missing that last bit of polish.

So my view is simple: if you’re a longtime Mafia player, this is news worth keeping in mind, but don’t get too excited just yet; if what you care more about is something fresh, then keep watching and wait for the official reveal before deciding where you stand. If I had to choose, I’d much rather see a proper new entry that fully finds its footing in modern storytelling and gameplay, rather than serving up Mafia 2 once again for another reheated run. Nostalgia, after all, is like digging out an old PS1 memory card now and then—it has a certain charm. But if you leave it plugged in every day and never take it out, sooner or later you’re going to get a save-load error.
