Microsoft says its new Advanced Shader Delivery system has cut shader compilation in Forza Horizon 6 from nearly 1 minute to 4 seconds, with the PC preview going live for AMD-based systems alongside the game’s early access launch. Developed by the DirectX team, the feature targets one of PC gaming’s most familiar annoyances: long shader-compilation waits on first boot. Right now, access is limited to users with AMD RDNA 3 or newer GPUs who join the PC Gaming Preview through Xbox Insider Hub.

For PC players, that matters for more than a cleaner benchmark number. Big-budget releases have spent years forcing players through a slow first-launch shader pass, with the excitement of jumping in immediately replaced by watching a progress bar crawl forward. If Forza Horizon 6 can really turn a near-1-minute wait into 4 seconds, the difference in how the game feels before you even start driving is substantial.

This is not just a one-off optimization for a single game. Microsoft is positioning it as a broader shader-delivery pipeline built by the DirectX team. The basic idea is straightforward: integrate shader compilers from different vendors, build a unified database of precompiled shaders in advance, and ship that data as part of the game install. In practical terms, some of the compilation work that used to happen locally on the player’s machine is now handled ahead of time, which shortens the wait when launching the game for the first time.

More importantly, Microsoft is not only talking in abstractions. In testing, a midrange PC with an AMD Radeon RX 7600 and Ryzen 7 5800 achieved roughly a 95% reduction in shader compilation time, while also cutting down on in-game stutter. That second point may matter even more than the loading-time gain. Players can tolerate a few extra seconds of waiting more easily than sudden frame drops and interruptions once they are already playing.

There are still clear limits to the preview. At the moment, it supports only AMD graphics cards based on RDNA 3 or newer architectures, and users also need to enroll in the PC Gaming Preview through Xbox Insider Hub. That is not a wide rollout. NVIDIA users cannot benefit directly yet, although Microsoft says support will gradually expand to more GPU brands. The broader context also matters here: NVIDIA introduced its beta Auto Shader Compilation technology in March this year, and Steam has had Shader Pre-Caching in place since 2017. The industry has been pushing on the same problem for a while.

The value of this tech also extends beyond Forza Horizon 6. Microsoft says it already launched on the ROG Xbox Ally handheld line in October 2025, and now supports dozens of games including The Outer Worlds 2 and Gears of War: Reloaded. As games continue to grow in scale and visual complexity, both long startup waits and runtime stutter are becoming less acceptable. The companies that solve those two pain points first will be in the best position to improve the next phase of the PC gaming experience.

If you already have an AMD RDNA 3 or newer GPU and plan to get into Forza Horizon 6 early, this preview is worth watching because the improvement should be immediately noticeable. If your hardware is outside that range, though, there is no reason to replace a graphics card just for this one feature. It makes more sense to wait and see how Microsoft expands support. In the end, players do not care how complicated the technology sounds. They care about spending less time waiting to launch a game, and less time dealing with stutter once they are in. If Advanced Shader Delivery matures and rolls out broadly, PC startup and runtime performance could genuinely take a meaningful step forward.
