Switch 2's battery dies if left uncharged for six months, Nintendo warns

Nintendo's Japanese customer support posted a reminder on social media: Switch 2 and similar devices with lithium-ion batteries need charging at least once every six months, or they risk losing their ability to hold a charge.

The warning targets a real problem—consoles left untouched for months enter deep discharge states that permanently damage the battery's internal chemistry. Nintendo's message is blunt: you don't have to play it, but you do have to charge it.

Switch 2's system settings include a new "stop charging at approximately 90%" feature borrowed from smartphone manufacturers. Keeping batteries at full charge while constantly docked accelerates degradation; capping at 90% extends lifespan. For players who leave their console permanently docked as living room furniture, this matters.

Nintendo also confirmed Switch 2 will use replaceable batteries to comply with EU regulations. When the battery degrades, you swap it out instead of sending the entire unit for repair. It's consumer-friendly, but it also means you're responsible for maintenance—the company has made that clear.

Set a calendar reminder for biannual charging sessions. Better yet, actually use the console every few weeks. It keeps the battery healthy and justifies owning the hardware in the first place.
