No Rest for the Wicked Is Coming to PS5 First, but How Long Is Xbox Waiting

Moon Studios used Sony's June State of Play to formally unveil the 1.0 release of No Rest for the Wicked, confirming that the dark action RPG will hit Steam and PS5 in October 2026. The studio's official website says the 1.0 version launches on those two platforms at the same time, while Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo's next-generation system, Switch 2, are still listed as TBD. What should have been a straightforward full-release milestone has instead turned into a conversation about platform order, and why PlayStation is getting there first.

For a game this dependent on mood, character, and player attachment, that is a slightly unfortunate shift. Seeing No Rest for the Wicked move toward a proper 1.0 release should have been the headline on its own. Instead, attention quickly swung to the release sequence, and that is largely because Thomas Mahler, Moon Studios co-founder and game director, gave a very direct explanation for the delay on Xbox.

The core issue, according to Mahler, is Xbox Series S optimization. Moon Studios' own messaging is clear enough on the facts: Steam and PS5 are set for October 2026, while Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2 remain TBD. On the information level, there is no real ambiguity here.

What stands out more is that the studio's language does not read like a purely technical delay. It also suggests a broader platform priority. Mahler has previously said the team needs to finish the heavy optimization work for Switch 2 and Xbox, make sure quality is fully up to standard, and only then consider release timing. He also said that by 2026, the hardware specs of the Xbox Series S are not far off from those of a high-end smartphone.

That is the point where the message starts to land differently. High optimization costs and development pressure are real industry problems, and it is easy enough to understand why a team would want to avoid shipping a compromised version. But once the explanation moves from "this version is difficult" to a remark about Series S hardware being comparable to a premium phone in 2026, players are no longer just hearing a technical justification. They are also hearing where they sit in the queue.

For people already waiting inside the Xbox ecosystem, that matters. It can feel less like reassurance and more like being quietly moved to the standby list. And this is not the first time Mahler has publicly leaned toward PlayStation while downplaying Xbox release priority. He has said before that, beyond the optimization burden of Series S, PS5 has already pulled clearly ahead of Xbox in global install base and hardware sales. In July last year, he also said on the studio's Discord that, given current market conditions, the team might prioritize PS5 and Switch 2 first, then negotiate with Microsoft leadership to decide whether an Xbox release makes business sense.

That context makes the current rollout easier to understand, but not necessarily easier to like.

From a buying perspective, the advice is pretty simple. If you are on PC or PS5, this is a clean update: wait for October 2026, because that is the clearest launch plan Moon Studios has given. If you only play on Xbox, No Rest for the Wicked is not a game you should build a timetable around yet, because it does not even have a release window there. And if you are planning around Switch 2, it is better to treat this as a future release rather than a synchronized launch, at least until the studio shares more on optimization progress.

It is reasonable for Moon Studios to stabilize quality first and make the harder platform calls afterward. That is more responsible than forcing out a half-finished version. But from the player's side, the real hope is not for another round of platform positioning. It is for No Rest for the Wicked itself to justify the wait. When October 2026 arrives, the better outcome would be for people to remember the game, not the platform friction around it.
