The Outer Worlds delists from PS4 on May 27, free PS5 upgrade available

Obsidian Entertainment announced that PS4 owners of The Outer Worlds will automatically receive a free upgrade to the PS5 Spacer's Choice Edition before the original version gets delisted from most storefronts on May 27, 2026.

The gesture is surprisingly generous considering the Spacer's Choice Edition's troubled launch. The remaster delivered its promised features—4K/60fps, dynamic weather, overhauled lighting—but shipped with enough technical issues to crater its Metacritic score from the original's 85 to 72. Obsidian is now attempting damage control with free upgrades for existing owners and a permanent $20 price cut to $39.99 after the May 27 cutoff.

The original version isn't disappearing entirely—PS4, Xbox One, and Switch versions will remain available, while PC and other platforms lose access to the base game. Obsidian released patch 2.5.7.0 today, with a second major update coming later in May that includes performance fixes, lighting adjustments, quest repairs, and a new grenade combat option with DualSense controller support.

If you own the PS4 version, the upgrade happens automatically before May 27—no action required. New buyers should wait until after the deadline to grab the PS5 version at the reduced price. For players who abandoned the Spacer's Choice Edition due to technical problems, the upcoming patch might justify a second look. Obsidian's narrative strengths were never in question; once the technical foundation stabilizes, the game delivers.
