50 Layoffs! Why the Horizon Series Mobile Game Failed to Gain Traction
While squeezing onto the subway this morning, I opened the news app and saw the report on Sony's layoffs. I had originally planned to relax and casually play some mobile games during my commute. Turns out even a major tech giant took a huge tumble in the mobile gaming sector. This news was so shocking that the iced milk tea I just bought lost its appeal. After all, we casual players are most afraid of games suddenly shutting down.
I heard the mobile department was shut down, laying off about 50 staff members. It's quite a pity that the studio was dissolved before even releasing its first game. Sony has tried bringing console blockbusters to mobile before. For instance, the adaptation of the Horizon series actually didn't meet expectations. Players felt the controls were complex and playing was just too exhausting.

Besides, forcing a console experience onto a small screen is indeed very awkward. Another point is that our daily schedules are too fragmented. No one wants to study complex skill trees on a crowded subway, right? A comfortable game should be as simple as scrolling through short videos. If it forces spending or is too grindy, just uninstall it without hesitation.
However, Sony's setback this time serves as a gentle reminder to players. The big company halo doesn't guarantee success in mobile gaming. Let's just wait for high-quality games truly suited for mobile platforms. Casual players really just want to clear levels simply and happily.
Hope to see good works from major companies that truly understand mobile games next time. Don't always demand mobile experiences meet console standards. After all, everyone is tired from work and just wants to play casually for a while. Good games should make people lose track of time, right?
