Metaphor: ReFantazio Flops in Japan—PS5 Sells Under 50K in Two Weeks, Switch 2 Launch Just 15K
Capcom's Exoprimal launched April 17 on PC/PS5/XSX, with a Switch 2 version following April 24, but Japanese sales data shows the PS5 version still hasn't crossed 50,000 units in its second week, while the Switch 2 debut managed less than 15,000 copies. This sci-fi shooter—which once topped Famitsu's most-anticipated reader poll—is delivering numbers that sharply contradict its pre-release buzz.

The gameplay concept of blending hacker puzzles with third-person shooting isn't inherently flawed. The issue is Capcom may have misjudged the market: Japanese players show far less appetite for hard sci-fi themes than Western audiences. Other titles releasing in the same window with more distinctly Japanese aesthetics posted noticeably steadier sales.

The Switch 2 figure—under 15,000 at launch—deserves particular attention. New hardware launches typically create a sales bump, but Exoprimal clearly missed that window. The game's performance demands likely forced visual compromises on Switch 2, and precision shooters suffer in handheld mode. Core players gravitated toward PS5 or PC instead.
Capcom's multi-platform strategy spread resources thin here. Simultaneous PC and console releases already demand significant bandwidth; adding Switch 2 a week later diluted optimization and marketing efforts across all three. Compare this to publishers who concentrate on one platform first, build word-of-mouth, then expand—Exoprimal's broad launch clearly underperformed in Japan.
Long-term prospects may be stronger in Western markets. Sci-fi shooters with puzzle elements have an established Steam audience, and consistent updates plus solid community management could gradually rebuild momentum on PC. But Capcom can't ignore the domestic signal: not every IP benefits from chasing Western gameplay trends. Understanding local player preferences sometimes matters more than following international formulas.
