Sony Forces 30-Day Online Check for PS Digital Games, Players Pay for Piracy Crackdown

Sony's PlayStation digital games now require online verification every 30 days or they'll be locked and unplayable. Sony customer support has confirmed the mechanism, and ResetEra user andshrew's investigation suggests it's a patch for a refund exploit.

Someone found a loophole. PS4 originally installed unlimited-duration license files for all content owned by a player's account, meaning fully purchased games could theoretically run offline forever. But people discovered they could extract license files from jailbroken PS4s, request refunds, keep the money and keep playing. Sony's response: slap a 30-day license limit on newly purchased content, forcing periodic online check-ins.

andshrew's test data reveals the rollout pattern: a game purchased April 9 received a 30-day license on April 21, which converted to unlimited after 30 minutes of installation. A game purchased and installed April 27 remained stuck on 30-day authorization. Sony appears to be tightening the policy gradually, with the new mechanism still in testing.

Regular players are collateral damage. You paid full price for digital games, now you must check in online monthly or get treated like a pirate. PS+ Extra and Premium already had 14-day licenses, now even purchased games face restrictions. Sony has issued no official announcement with detailed explanation, only verbal confirmation from customer support, which feels deliberately opaque.

If you've recently bought PS digital games, stay online regularly, or wait for Sony's formal statement before buying more digital content. Physical discs cost more but avoid this mess entirely.
