Has exploring in *Crimson Desert* turned into a trap? Picking up items in advance can directly soft-lock the quest

What impressed me most, surprisingly, wasn’t the grand spectacle of Crimson Desert. It was its open-ended spirit of exploration that encourages you to run around, poke into everything, discover first and understand later. Ironically, though, what tripped players up this time was precisely that very act of “discovering first.”

Recently, players on Reddit reported that while exploring the Abyss area and solving the “Malice Passage” puzzle, they picked up the “Fruit of Life” ahead of time. The problem is that this item isn’t just some ordinary material you can grab casually—it is the target item for “Life Fragment,” the second quest in the “Light of Tarif” questline. Under the normal progression, players are supposed to obtain it from the “Brother Tree.”

And that’s where it gets awkward. Once you pick it up early, the item cannot be obtained again later, making “Life Fragment” impossible to complete and also preventing the follow-up quest “Light of Awakening” from starting. What seems like a clever act of exploration ends up locking the entire questline, which feels a lot like stumbling onto the answer early in Outer Wilds only for the game to decide you never read the question—frustrating and absurd at the same time.

What’s actually more interesting than the Bug itself is the community reaction. Quite a few players in the comments said they ran into the exact same issue, which suggests this isn’t some rare edge-case problem but a fairly easy progression gap to trigger. Some players also pointed out bluntly that open worlds are supposed to reward curiosity, so getting progression-locked because you explored too thoroughly feels especially punishing. Worse still, it can directly drain your motivation to keep playing.

For now, there are still some temporary workarounds on PC. If you haven’t lost much progress, you can consider loading an earlier save; a more aggressive option is to use a save editor to mark the relevant quest as “completed,” or rely on a Mod to skip the blocked step. Unfortunately, these methods are really just ways of forcing the door open rather than properly repairing the path, and the intended quest experience is still missing. Console players are in an even more passive position, since system restrictions mean they can only wait for an official fix.

If you’re planning to push through this Crimson Desert questline soon, my advice is simple: manually back up your save before exploring the Abyss area, and if you come across the “Fruit of Life,” don’t rush to pick it up—at least confirm first whether you’ve already accepted “Life Fragment.” It may sound like a clunky precaution, but it’s far better than wasting dozens of minutes or even hours of playtime. This trap is especially aimed at players who like to clear maps methodically.

From the player’s perspective, this kind of Bug is even more damaging than balance issues. That’s because what it disrupts isn’t combat pacing, but the positive feedback loop of “I discovered a secret of the world.” Pearl Abyss has generally been fairly quick when it comes to fixing Bugs, and players are now waiting for a hotfix to go live as soon as possible. Hopefully it won’t take too long this time, because the last thing an open world should do is turn explorers into victims.
