Ryse: Son of Rome Remaster is reportedly in development at Crytek, according to a leaker. The report says the project is still being built on Crytek's CryEngine, with upgrades to its visuals and technical performance for the action game that first launched on November 22, 2013 as an Xbox One launch title. So far, Crytek has not publicly responded, so it should still be treated cautiously.

The more interesting part of the rumor is what it could mean for the series. It may suggest Crytek is taking another look at the Ryse series. The original Ryse: Son of Rome arrived on PC in 2014, and it was known less for combat depth than for visuals that stood out early in the console generation. It was essentially a hardware showcase, showing what the engine and presentation could do.
That also makes a remaster easier to picture than a full remake. Ryse: Son of Rome is a third-person action-adventure hack-and-slash in which players control the Roman general Marius Titus, who seeks revenge after his family is murdered. Its linear structure, Roman setting, and broad visual identity still hold up reasonably well today. What has dated more is the tech and some of the combat feel. If this leak is accurate, keeping the game on CryEngine and upgrading the visuals and underlying tech points to a practical project, one that may be testing the waters for a sequel rather than trying to justify the much higher cost of a full rebuild.

The leaker also raises a more interesting possibility: Crytek may be preparing a follow-up and wants to use a remaster of the first game to bring new players into the series. That approach is hardly unusual. A remaster can lower the barrier to entry, then give a publisher a read on interest at a relatively controlled cost. For the original Ryse, the biggest issue was never the Roman setting itself. It was that its limited content and shallow gameplay would come under much harsher scrutiny today.
So the real question is not just whether the remaster is real. It is what form and price point Crytek would choose. If this is only a standard upgrade to resolution, textures, and lighting, it fits better as a mid-priced nostalgia release. If the studio also revises combat feel, execution pacing, and the flow of the campaign, the package would look much stronger. For players who never touched the original, the draw is mostly a contained single-player campaign and a setting you still do not see often, not long-term engagement.
For now, though, this remains a rumor. The report notes that the same leaker correctly said in January 2025 that Forza Horizon 6 would be set in Japan, which gives the claim some added credibility, but not certainty. What ultimately matters is whether Crytek formally comments, and whether it sees Ryse as a series worth revisiting, rather than just dusting off an old tech showcase.
