Age of Empires Creator Says Blizzard Doesn’t Need Saving

Sandy Petersen, a veteran designer who worked on Doom, Quake, and Age of Empires, recently answered a social media question about how to “save Blizzard” with a blunt response: there is no need to save Blizzard, Microsoft, id Software, or Atari. In Petersen’s view, no game company needs saving at all. The take quickly struck a chord with both players and people across the industry.

I largely agree with the sentiment. Game studios do not survive on nostalgia; they survive by continuing to make games people actually want to play. If a company keeps drifting strategically, or its work has already fallen out of step with player expectations, there is little value in trying to keep it on life support.

Petersen’s point is also refreshingly direct, in a business that often dodges this kind of conclusion. His view is that the games business runs on constant innovation and real player feedback. If a company can no longer sustain itself because of bad decisions or because it has lost touch with its audience, the best outcome is to let it leave the market naturally.

The reason is simple: the business already renews itself. When older companies leave, newer ones get room to grow, often with more energy, a better understanding of players, and a closer connection to the fundamentals of making games.

What matters is how quickly people rallied around that view. It reflects a broader frustration among players and developers who think decline is inevitable once creativity gives way to dogma. More and more, people are no longer judging studios on brand name alone. They are asking whether those studios still understand players, and whether they still know how to make games. In that sense, survival is not the point. Making great games is.
