Returnal got patch 1.005.1 on PS5 on June 11, 2026, roughly a month and a half after launch, as Housemarque continues tuning the game for both new players and the existing audience. Beyond the usual fixes and optimizations, the headline addition is a full Photo Mode, plus 9 new trophies tied to it. It is not an especially quick turnaround, but it does confirm Housemarque is still actively supporting the game.

Housemarque is moving in the right direction. Adding Photo Mode a month and a half in is hardly quick, but it still matters. For a studio this good at audiovisual spectacle, shipping without one always felt like a missing piece. A game built so heavily around atmosphere, lighting, and speed should give players better tools than a basic system screenshot.

The feature set is solid. Photo Mode includes a free camera, lens adjustment, depth of field, exposure, contrast, saturation, filters, frames, and lighting effects. Players can freeze combat at any time, capture the landscapes of Carcosa, or frame protagonist Arjun, then share the results. None of it is surprising by current standards, but that is the point: this is the sort of feature the game should have had from day one, and now it finally does.

To Housemarque's credit, using it does not seem awkward. The update includes options to hide the character and UI, save with a single button press, and share directly through the PS5 platform. That ease of use matters. Photo modes tend to fail in two obvious ways: the menu is buried, or exporting shots takes too long. Returnal avoids both pitfalls well enough that it never feels like the studio is putting players off the feature.

The 9 new trophies also make sense as a way to nudge console players toward the new mode. You can read them as encouragement to try Photo Mode, or simply as a reason for older players to come back. After a month and a half on the market, early adopters have mostly either finished the game or moved on. At that point, an update like this does two things: it pulls existing players back in and shows hesitant buyers that the game is still being maintained.

This kind of patch is simply more visible than a standard bug-fix pass. Fixes and optimizations are expected; Photo Mode is something players notice immediately. That matters even more in a game like Returnal, where mood, lighting, and split-second action are central to the appeal. Being able to freeze those combat moments makes the game's appeal easier to share.

This patch introduces a new Photo Mode for capturing game moments, along with 9 new trophy challenges. It also includes world design fixes, improved boss cutscene performance, and various minor bug fixes and optimizations.

If you are already playing, this patch is worth downloading for Photo Mode alone. If you are still undecided, Photo Mode by itself probably will not sell you on the game, since this is not a systems overhaul or a major content expansion. What it does show is that Housemarque is still steadily working on Returnal. That is a much better signal than post-launch silence.
