SEGA officially unveiled "SEGA Universe," a new initiative with the tagline "NO OLD, STAY GOLD" aimed at reviving its classic IPs beyond traditional gaming formats. The project will expand into film, music, and fashion, focusing initially on franchises celebrating anniversaries in 2026.

Nine legacy titles made the anniversary lineup, including Streets of Rage, Sakura Wars, and Crazy Taxi. SEGA confirmed sequels for Streets of Rage and Crazy Taxi are already in development. The real question is whether these revivals will support multiplayer—single-player-only designs would feel dated in 2025.

The cross-media approach makes sense. Nintendo proved the model works with the Super Mario Bros. Movie's box office success. SEGA's positioning games as entry points to broader entertainment ecosystems—shows, soundtracks, apparel—follows that playbook. Long-term transmedia operation is now the stated core strategy.

Co-op potential matters here. A four-player Streets of Rage could deliver genuine replay value with friends. But if SEGA sticks to legacy single-player structures, younger audiences may skip these entirely. Half the appeal of beat-'em-ups today is the shared chaos.

SEGA's betting on nostalgia, which works for older players. Whether it lands with a younger demographic depends on execution. Reskins won't cut it—these revivals need modern social features. Without multiplayer hooks, "STAY GOLD" risks becoming just "OLD" with better graphics.
