Is SONIC PICO PARK Worth It for the Sonic Collaboration

PICO PARK Co., Ltd. has announced SONIC PICO PARK for Steam, with its first trailer debuting at Summer Game Fest 2026. The game is the latest entry in the PICO PARK series and a crossover project created to celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog's 35th anniversary. The setup is straightforward: a 2-to-8-player co-op action-puzzle game with both local and online play, now built around one of Sega's most recognizable series.

That is promising, but it is also too early to oversell. What stands out for now is not originality. It is that the crossover itself makes sense. PICO PARK already thrives on multiplayer cooperation, while Sonic the Hedgehog brings a clearer action identity and instantly readable characters.

The playable cast goes beyond PICO CAT and includes Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. The more important detail is that every playable character can use the Spin Dash. That suggests this is not just a cosmetic collaboration. At the very least, that means the team is trying to give the whole roster a shared movement hook.

The trailer also shows recognizable Sonic series mechanics and stage elements, including gold rings, loop-shaped terrain, and springs. The real question is whether those elements do anything beyond looking familiar. If they are only visual decoration, then this will feel more like merchandise than a real crossover. If they genuinely change the rhythm of cooperative puzzle-solving, then the crossover will have landed.

PICO PARK has never really been about solo play. It is the chaos and coordination that emerge when multiple players try to solve problems together. Sonic's presence should, at least in theory, make the game faster while making mistakes more punishing and more noticeable. For players who like couch co-op or voice-chat sessions, that is a plus. For anyone hoping to play alone at a slower pace, this is probably not the game for them.

Director Shunsuke Miyake is also worth noting. In a developer message, he says PICO PARK originally began as a game he made by himself, and that he also worked at Sega for 15 years. That background does not guarantee anything, but it does suggest the team understands that Sonic needs to be more than a nostalgia label here.

At this stage, confirmed details are still limited. Steam is the only announced platform, and other versions have not been decided. Merchandise featuring the crossover characters is already planned to coincide with the game's release. That pattern is familiar enough: the name gets attention first, and the finished game has to justify it. The developers have also said they are currently working at full speed, so this is a project better to watch than to judge too early.

If you already like games in the PICO PARK mold, this is an easy wishlist add. If what you want is a pure Sonic action game, expectations should come down now. The core remains a multiplayer co-op puzzle game. Sonic looks more like the piece that makes that formula faster, louder, and more prone to chaos.

For now, the direction looks right, and the outcome will depend on whether the level design truly puts the crossover elements to work. If it does, this could be a smart fit. If it does not, it will be a limited project with a very marketable name.
