Sony's PC ports underperform as exclusivity strategy faces renewed scrutiny
Sony's PC ports are underperforming. Ghost of Tsushima sold roughly 710,000 copies on PC, God of War Ragnarök around 300,000, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 about 260,000, and Horizon Forbidden West approximately 230,000. The company is now reconsidering its PC porting strategy for single-player titles, potentially scaling back or halting future releases to reinforce PlayStation exclusivity.

Rate this outcome a 6 out of 10. Not shocking, but genuinely underwhelming. God of War Ragnarök launched on console with 6.9 million players; the PC version captured 300,000. That's under 5% conversion. The problem isn't PC audience disinterest—it's Sony's execution.
Timing kills momentum. These games hit PC months or years after console launch. Hype has cooled, players have finished or watched playthroughs, and full-price "late ports" are a tough sell. Some titles shipped without Denuvo, getting cracked faster than legitimate copies could gain traction.

Sony isn't abandoning PC entirely. Live-service games will continue simultaneous releases—those need population density to survive. The cuts target single-player blockbusters, the titles that were supposed to drive PlayStation hardware sales. If PC versions don't move units, Sony's reverting to the old playbook: want to play? Buy the console.

This echoes the PS3 era, when Sony's first-party lineup stayed locked to console. Uncharted and The Last of Us were PlayStation-only, driving hardware purchases. Sony appears ready to resurrect that approach. PC players will complain short-term, but exclusives remain the strongest moat for console ecosystems.
Sony's not being petty—it's doing the math. PC ports require investment, deliver weak sales, and risk piracy and brand dilution. Concentrating resources on the PlayStation ecosystem makes financial sense. For PS5 owners, this is a win: first-party blockbusters may return to being exclusive perks.
