Sony Halts All PS5 Game PC Ports

Sony has confirmed it's halting PC ports for its flagship single-player titles, limiting future PC releases to live-service games on Steam and similar platforms. The shift follows a steep decline in first-party PC sales—Marvel's Spider-Man 2 moved just 260,000 copies in its first month on PC, while Horizon Forbidden West managed 230,000.

The PlayStation numbers tell a different story. God of War Ragnarök sold 6.9 million copies at PS launch but only 300,000 in its first PC month. Even Ghost of Tsushima, the best PC performer, hit 710,000 first-month sales—respectable, but hardly a breakout for Sony's premium lineup. The timing compounds the problem: these ports typically arrive nearly two years after console release, well past peak hype.

Sony's logic is straightforward. PC players can wait, but Sony can't afford to—hardware sales drive the console business model. When exclusives become timed exclusives, PS5 loses half its value proposition, and PC port revenue doesn't offset potential console losses.

Microsoft took the opposite route with day-one Game Pass releases across platforms, betting on subscription ecosystems over hardware lockdown. Sony's reversal draws a clearer line: narrative-driven single-player games stay PS5-exclusive, while multiplayer titles get PC access. For cross-platform players, this means buying a console remains the only option for day-one Sony releases.
