Sony is developing a next-gen third-person horror shooter in partnership with another studio, built on Unreal Engine 5 with motion capture technology and some form of player progression system.

The "next-gen" label is what stands out here. Firesprite was previously rumored to be working on Until Dawn 2 under the codename Project Heartbreak, targeting PS5 and PC. A new project suddenly pointing to next-gen platforms doesn't line up with that timeline.

What's notable is this mystery project was still in active development between August and October last year. Firesprite went through layoffs in 2024 with multiple projects canceled. Any project that survived that culling either has strong backing from Sony or already had something compelling to show.

Unreal Engine 5, motion capture, and a progression system—that's an ambitious setup. But without any actual footage, we're left guessing. Third-person horror shooters are rare enough. Is this aiming for Dead Space territory, or leaning closer to The Last of Us?

If this is a PS6 launch title, we're looking at a 2-3 year window. Sony's first-party standards combined with Firesprite's technical work on Horizon Call of the Mountain should deliver something solid. The real question is whether they can nail both the horror atmosphere and shooting mechanics—few games manage both well.
