Sony Pays $7.85 Million to Settle PS Store Monopoly Lawsuit
Sony has agreed to pay $7.85 million to settle a U.S. class action lawsuit over its April 2019 policy that banned third-party retailers from selling digital game keys for PlayStation. Eligible users must have purchased digital games between April 2019 and the end of 2023, with those games previously available as retail keys and showing at least a 50-cent price increase on the PS Store.

From a business standpoint, Sony's move was ruthless—cutting off third-party channels and forcing players into its walled garden. The problem is this approach violates basic market competition principles. Players used to find cheaper activation codes on platforms like CDKeys and Green Man Gaming. Now they watch PS Store prices climb with no alternative options for comparison.
The compensation structure is straightforward: $1 to $3 per qualifying purchase, deposited directly into PS Store wallet balances. The amount feels modest given the lawsuit's timeframe and affected user base—most individuals will likely receive $10 to $20 total. More importantly, this money stays within Sony's ecosystem, meaning the company's actual financial loss remains minimal.
Sony's monopolistic strategy boosted short-term profit margins but eroded player trust over time. Steam maintains its PC platform dominance partly because Valve never restricts third-party key sales, instead retaining users through frequent discounts and community features. Sony paid out this settlement, yet the underlying policy remains unchanged—whether the PS6 era repeats this pattern is an open question.
Before the final hearing on October 15, 2026, eligible players should watch for Sony's notification emails. The compensation is small, but free money is free money. Hopefully Sony learns something from this case—players aren't passive targets, and market competition forms the foundation of a healthy ecosystem.
