Splatoon: Splat Squad launches July 23rd! The series' first spin-off is here
That archipelago soaked in ink from the trailer, with light and shadow dancing between ruins and sea surface—I stared at the screen three times before I could bring myself to hit pause. Nintendo didn't hold back this time, pinning the release date for Splatoon: Strike Squad directly on July 23rd, exclusive to Switch 2.

This is the first time the Splatoon series has done a spin-off shooter. The protagonist switches from Inklings to mechanics, and the stage moves to the Spiralite Archipelago. Honestly, when I saw those close-up details of mechanical ink tanks and modification devices, I instinctively held my breath—the contrast between metallic textures and flowing ink, this industrial-meets-graffiti aesthetic atmosphere, hits exactly what I want.

Back to the game itself, the gameplay focus clearly leans toward single-player adventure this time. Nintendo has added a mission system to Splatoon for the first time—you'll explore the archipelago with members of the Squid Squad, no longer just pure multiplayer turf wars. HDR and 4K support finally give the Switch 2's capabilities a place to shine; those ink stains dyed orange-red by the sunset have so much detail you'll want to screenshot and save them.

Beyond the visuals though, what I'm more curious about is how the narrative will unfold. The series has never been great at storytelling, so now that they're emphasizing enhanced plot, we'll see if Nintendo can write the relationship between the mechanics and Squid Squad with some human touch. If it's just a reskin of grinding enemies, even the most beautiful scenery is just an empty shell.

For veteran players, this is an interesting branch attempt—it retains the core feel of ink-shooting while taking a step toward action-adventure. July 23rd isn't far off. When I get into the game, the first thing I'll definitely do is find a high point and snap a panoramic shot.
