A forum user recently posted a storage breakdown for Square Enix games, and the numbers make grim reading for anyone relying on Switch 2's built-in drive. The list puts the PC version of Final Fantasy XIV at 140GB, the Kingdom Hearts collection on Switch 2 at 131GB, and Final Fantasy XIV, due on Switch 2 on August 4, 2026, at 117GB.

The issue is not one unusually bloated install. It is the pattern. Final Fantasy XIV already sits at 140GB on PC. The Kingdom Hearts collection reaches 131GB on Switch 2. The incoming Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV is listed at 117GB. The forum user's line that "Square Enix alone can fill up your storage" reads like a joke, but it is close to the practical reality.
The most pointed part of the list is how clearly it exposes the Switch 2's 256GB internal storage limit. One copy of FF14 would take up nearly half of the system's built-in space, and it is larger than Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which previously came in at 102GB. Add a few permanent installs, system storage, update files, screenshots, and captured video, and deleting games stops being an occasional cleanup and becomes routine maintenance.

On the development side, this is not simply Square Enix refusing to compress its games. The original article notes that the handheld version has already compressed some textures, but audio assets, real-time voice packs, and high-definition CG movies still occupy a large amount of space. With limited decompression power on a mobile SoC, the team has to trade storage space for loading performance.
Those engineering constraints still land on players. They have to deal with the storage problem in front of them. FF14 already reaches 100GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, where larger drives give players more room to absorb that size. On Switch 2, the margin is much tighter. Big-budget games are getting larger everywhere, but the pressure becomes visible sooner on a handheld platform.
The practical advice is straightforward. If Final Fantasy XIV is the one long-term live-service game you plan to keep installed, 256GB can still get you through, barely. If you also want the Kingdom Hearts collection, other AAA games, and a regular set of indie titles on the same machine, a dedicated microSD Express card should probably be part of the budget from the start. This is not just one oversized Square Enix release. It is a broader pattern of trading storage space for performance, and Switch 2 players should plan their storage before the first big download.
