Magellan Gameplay Leak Shows What the Canceled Star Wars ARPG Could Have Been

A canceled Star Wars RPG codenamed Magellan surfaced online in August 2024, with gameplay footage shared on social platforms by an unnamed former Echtra Games employee who had worked on the project. Developed by Echtra Games under Zynga, the footage shows two playable characters, Jedi Cleric and Mandalorian Triggerman, fighting stormtroopers and large combat droids in a forest environment.

The clip's draw is not spectacle but atmosphere. Mist hangs between the trees. A lightsaber cuts through the morning haze with a measured flash. The camera moves past moss-covered ruins while blaster fire flickers through the woods, and Triggerman's jetpack sends leaves spinning into the air. It looks less like a combat showcase than a world with some texture to it.

The playable setup is also exactly the sort of thing Star Wars fans would expect. Cleric uses a lightsaber and the Force, while Triggerman leans on blasters and a jetpack. The combat shown includes stormtroopers and larger battle droids, with some sequences looking like early boss-fight prototypes.

According to the leak's description, Magellan was planned as a multiplayer ARPG-style looter shooter, with an NPC bond system also in development. That detail is not trivial. It suggests a game built around more than loot: characters, companions, and relationships that could have given the loop more weight between runs. It may have pushed the familiar "kill enemies, collect loot" formula toward something a little more lived-in.

In the end, Magellan is another canceled version of a modern Star Wars action RPG. Zynga acquired Echtra Games in 2021, then closed the studio four years later, taking Magellan with it. The footage reads less like a tease than a reminder of what the franchise lost along the way.

There is also the matter of the Mandalorian. Respawn previously had a project centered on Din Djarin, and that game was canceled as well. Magellan now joins it, leaving another playable Mandalorian concept stranded in unfinished footage and speculation.

For players, the leak is a brief look at a game that seemed atmospheric, playable, and full of potential. It is also a reminder that even a promising Star Wars world can end up locked on a developer's hard drive, unreleased and unfinished.
