Game Over! I’m Surrounded by Male Classmates apologizes for deleting its synopsis
Game Over! I'm Surrounded by Male Classmates is a free Chinese visual novel made by high school students at Nanchang Leishi Middle School and self-funded with $100 for its Steam release. It is now facing a boycott from several LGBTQ creators on Bilibili after its store description joked, "If you don't play it, you're gay." The team has already removed the line and posted an apology video, but the dispute has only grown louder.
First, the game did not become a hit by accident. Its absurd campus-comedy tone works better in a group: alone, it can feel awkward, but with a few friends in a dorm room, the same material becomes a running gag. It even reached a 98% positive rating at one point, which suggests players were very much on board with that light, silly approach.

The problem is that a school joke stops being private once it is published on a Steam store page. Opponents say this kind of treatment of LGBTQ identity is more subtle, and more troubling, than a direct insult. That argument makes sense, because once the meme spreads, the people turned into the punch line are rarely the ones laughing.

The apology video is the other weak point. The developers admitted they had pulled players into an argument and said sorry, but critics felt the response dodged the real issue. On Steam, the controversial description is gone and has been replaced by a row of periods, which is about as minimal as the cleanup gets.

The practical call is simple. Because the game is free, it makes sense to wait and see how the conversation settles before jumping in. If you and your friends only want a goofy campus comedy for one evening, that does not make the controversy irrelevant. In a group setting, what matters is whether everyone is comfortable. If not, even a joke that lands well will go flat.
