Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick Spells Out Why Annualized Franchises Are a Mistake—And Points to GTA's Eight-Year Gap as Evidence
At the TD Cohen conference, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick made the case that Grand Theft Auto's sustained dominance comes down to one principle: refusing to treat the series as an annual product. Zelnick noted that nearly 20 years ago, when he joined the company, the industry was caught in a rush toward yearly releases—a pattern he saw as fundamentally damaging to creative quality. "We never wanted our core IPs on a fixed annual cycle," Zelnick said, according to his remarks at the event.
The reasoning behind Take-Two's long development windows comes down to two factors. First, the company insists on giving development teams—primarily Rockstar Games—the time needed to build genuinely great games. Second, the gap creates genuine anticipation rather than treating each release as just another entry in a catalog.
When games launch on an annualized cycle, Zelnick argued, players start viewing them as obligatory rather than special. The series becomes "just another" purchase, and the excitement dissipates. But for Grand Theft Auto, the anticipation builds to a fever pitch with each new entry. That eight-year span between GTA5 and GTA6 isn't a flaw in the strategy—it's the strategy working as intended.
Looking at the broader game industry through a simulation and sandbox lens, GTA's approach aligns perfectly with what open-world players actually want: a vast, meticulously crafted virtual world, not a standardized product rolling off an assembly line. The "making players miss the game" philosophy that Zelnick described captures the emotional core of sandbox gaming—the anticipation itself becomes part of the experience.
For players who prioritize immersive simulation experiences and deep open-world design, the GTA model demonstrates that patience can produce something worth the wait.
