The Blood of Dawnwalker will ship with a full physical disc containing the entire game, according to game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, who confirmed the plan to Eurogamer. Publisher Bandai Namco has also verified that the disc includes all game data, meaning players can play the full game on September 3, with the day-one patch offered only as an optional optimization.

That stands out because many current so-called physical editions are little more than boxed licenses, with the actual game still requiring a full online download. For anyone buying discs to keep an offline, usable copy of a game, The Blood of Dawnwalker is bringing back what physical editions used to offer. By contrast, a package that only proves ownership is basically a pricier wrapper for a download code.
That contrast is even sharper next to GTA6, which is set to launch in a boxed redemption-code format. That reflects the industry's continued shift toward digital distribution, while The Blood of Dawnwalker is still opting to ship the full game on disc. More importantly, it tells console players something increasingly rare: the disc actually contains the game. Even if servers go offline or the game is delisted in the future, the disc still has basic use as a way to play.

Inside the PlayStation ecosystem, that matters even more. Sony has already announced it will stop producing PlayStation game discs in 2028, which means full on-disc physical releases are only going to get rarer. Digital versions may be more convenient, but a full physical disc has something in common with the old PC habit of keeping local installers around: less streamlined, but more reassuring in the long run.
The game itself helps. In an exclusive four-hour hands-on preview, Eurogamer was highly positive about The Blood of Dawnwalker, praising the depth of its combat system, its sandbox freedom, and its time-limit mechanics. The outlet also described it as one of the most impressive RPGs in recent years. Right now, the pitch works on two levels: the game looks strong on its own merits, and it is also one of the few releases still committed to putting the full product on the disc.
From a player perspective, that's a pretty clear selling point. PC players are already used to digital libraries, and mobile players have long since accepted download verification as normal. But console collectors, second-hand buyers, and anyone who cares about preservation or offline access are far more likely to respond to that. If you were already planning to buy The Blood of Dawnwalker at launch, its physical edition is easier to justify than a lot of similarly priced alternatives. Very few games in this space are currently raising expectations for both quality and long-term physical ownership at the same time.

Optional optimization patch and all data on disc is a big plus, but I’m still waiting to see if the strong 4-hour preview holds up after launch.
Fair, a 4-hour preview can only prove so much, but Bandai Namco confirming the full game is playable from the disc on September 3 already puts it ahead of a lot of releases.
Having the full game on disc at launch honestly makes this an easier buy for me, and an optional day-one patch is how physical releases should work.
