The Last of Us Online Canceled Despite Internal Claims It Was Good
Naughty Dog officially canceled The Last of Us Online in 2023. Vinit Agarwal, the project's former director, learned about the decision just one day before the public announcement.

The striking part: developers who played internal builds still call it one of the best multiplayer experiences they've had. Not corporate spin—genuine conviction. When a canceled project leaves its team this impressed, something real was there.

Scale killed it. Once production ramped up, the game's scope ballooned past initial projections. Naughty Dog faced a fork: pivot the entire studio toward live-service operations—constant data monitoring, seasonal updates, retention metrics—or stick with their single-player narrative model where projects have defined endpoints. They chose the latter.

From an exploratory standpoint, the call makes sense. Live-service games demand perpetual renovation to retain audiences. Naughty Dog builds intricate, self-contained experiences designed to leave lasting impressions in one playthrough. Forcing that pivot risks mediocrity on both fronts. Still, those "quality experiences" the internal team vouches for will never face public scrutiny—players lost their chance to verify the claims firsthand.
