Final Fantasy 7's Tifa turns 39, officially born in 1987 according to canon
Tifa Lockhart turns 39 today. According to official canon, the Final Fantasy VII character was born on May 3, 1987.
The timeline creates an odd quirk. A 1987 birth year makes Tifa younger than the game itself—she would've been 10 when the original Final Fantasy VII launched in 1997. Square probably didn't expect anyone to still be calculating her age in 2026 when they assigned that birthday.
Official age designations occupy strange territory. In-game Tifa is perpetually 20. Remake Tifa is also perpetually 20. Call her 39 if you want, but players still see the same bartender at Seventh Heaven. This real-time aging with frozen characters isn't unique—Street Fighter's Chun-Li would be pushing 60 by her official birthdate.
It's mostly a fan celebration hook. Every May 3rd, social media fills with Tifa birthday art, Square drops a congratulatory post, everyone's happy. More interesting than the age debate: when does Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Part 3 arrive? Tifa's story isn't finished, and her Nibelheim memories are what actually deserve deeper exploration.
Happy 39th birthday, even if you'll never age in-game.
