Trails in the Sky the 2nd Chinese edition cuts bonuses, Clouded Leopard drops Steam codes
Trails in the Sky the 2nd launches September 17, 2026 on Switch 2, Switch, PS5, and PC (Steam), with the Chinese version published by Unalis. Official details confirm the Chinese release excludes Steam download codes and offers bonus content in Japanese only.

Regional parity gaps aren't new in JRPG distribution, but for a series with Trails' established Chinese fanbase, stripped-down bonuses complicate the value proposition. As a full remake of Trails in the Sky SC, this should've been a straightforward celebration for longtime fans—instead, publishing decisions have turned it into a cost-benefit calculation.

No Steam code means physical buyers lose dual-platform access, a real problem for players who switch between devices. More critically, Japanese-only artbooks and soundtracks gut the collectible appeal for non-Japanese readers. Unalis typically delivers solid localizations, but this time they clearly didn't secure better terms on bonus materials.
The publisher's logic is probably cost management. China's physical market is large but fragmented, and standardizing bonuses across regions drives up expenses. Still, this approach risks "second-class customer" backlash, especially when Japanese buyers get the full package.
If you're going digital-only, none of this matters. For physical collectors or bonus hunters, wait for post-launch community feedback before committing. The Trails series has always won on narrative and worldbuilding—the game itself is what counts, bonuses are just extras. It's just that this time, Chinese players are getting fewer extras.
