Has *Uncharted 5* really been canceled? What I fear more is that it may never come back.

The wind by the snowy mountains cuts in like a blade. A lone figure hangs off the outer face of a cliff, fingers hooked into a crack in the rock, with a pale abyss yawning below. Every time I see a scene like this in Uncharted, I instinctively hold my breath—not because it’s especially thrilling, but because that sense of space, that feeling of “falling into the clouds in the next second,” is just too perfect to not stop and take a screenshot. For someone like me, who looks for the best camera angle before making progress, this series has always had a very particular charm: it’s not just fun, it genuinely makes you want to live inside those ruins, coastlines, wastelands, and dusks.

Back to the game itself: Insider Gaming recently mentioned on a radio show that Uncharted 5 had actually once been on the development schedule, but was scrapped during the pandemic. Based on the leaks, Naughty Dog had done some early project planning just before the outbreak, with directions that could either have continued Nathan Drake’s story or passed the lead role to his daughter, Cassie. The problem is that 2016’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End already gave Drake a very complete conclusion, and ever since then, there has never been any real concrete news about a mainline fifth entry moving forward.

It’s not surprising that this rumor has stirred up such a huge reaction. After all, since Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune in 2007, this series has been with many players for far too long. With no confirmed news of a true sequel for a full ten years, the emotions have built up like a tide pressing against the shore—any hint of movement is enough to make it surge. Reddit is already full of discussion: some are lamenting it, while others are calmly analyzing the situation, pointing out that Naughty Dog has never been afraid to move on from its own flagship franchises. From Crash Bandicoot to Jak and Daxter, it has always dared to turn the bow toward new waters.

But beyond the spectacle, what’s really worth noting is how Naughty Dog’s priorities have shifted in recent years. Leaks and industry analysis widely suggest that, after bringing The Last of Us to a temporary close, the studio has committed its core resources to a brand-new sci-fi IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. If that assessment is anywhere close to the truth, then Uncharted 5 being shelved indefinitely may not be just a matter of the pandemic getting in the way—it may mean the direction has genuinely changed. Put plainly, the pandemic was like a sudden downpour, but whether to keep sailing still depends on where the captain wants to go.

Another detail that has reignited hope among longtime players is that Shaun Escayg, director of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, recently posted a photo on social media that users speculated might show historical ruins in Trinidad, captioned, “Doing some research and location scouting...”. The Caribbean, coastal ruins, remnants of old civilizations—those images do fit Uncharted’s vibe remarkably well, which is why people were so quick to connect the dots. Still, it’s worth staying grounded here: most of the current information consists of leaks and analysis, and until Naughty Dog officially confirms anything, it’s probably best to keep expectations in check and not set yourself up for disappointment.

If you ask me whether this series still needs an Uncharted 5, my answer is actually very simple: yes—but not if it means “doing the same thing one more time.” Drake’s story was wrapped up beautifully, like a sunset, and forcing him back into the adventure may not be nearly as moving as letting Cassie take up the mantle. Judging by current trends, major studios today are more willing to pour resources into new IPs that can launch entirely new universes, and that is also an important part of why Uncharted has remained silent for so long. But from another angle, it’s exactly at times like this that players miss that old-fashioned sense of adventure—the kind where sunlight falls across the stone walls of ruins, and the moment the music starts, you want to set out too. If it really does get revived one day, I only hope that its first official screenshot will still make me stop and stare for a long time, reluctant to swipe away.
