The Witcher New Trilogy Skips Major DLC as CDPR Focuses on 6-Year Plan

According to a recent interview, CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski says the studio is unlikely to make new The Witcher trilogy entries with expansion packs on the scale of Hearts of Stone or Blood and Wine. The reason is simple: CDPR is now focused on an ambitious plan to finish and release a brand-new The Witcher trilogy within 6 years. That shift does not mean the studio is done with the series. It does mean resources are being funneled toward shipping full RPGs faster, not sustaining one game with years of heavyweight DLC.

In practice, that is a very different production model from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CDPR already proved the value of major post-launch content with Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, both of which substantially extended that game’s life. But when the priority becomes delivering 3 new games in 6 years, the math changes. Large story expansions are expensive, slow to make, and hard to run alongside mainline development for that long.

That is why this sounds less like a dramatic strategic reversal than a resource decision. CDPR still plans to keep making extra content for the The Witcher universe, but the future is more likely to favor smaller, more manageable additions than another Blood and Wine-sized expansion. The upcoming Phantom Liberty, planned for 2027, is already being used as a comparison point for scale against Blood and Wine.

For players, the takeaway is straightforward: the new trilogy should arrive as a more complete package, sooner, rather than as a single game that keeps growing for years. Fans who loved the lavish scope of Blood and Wine may be disappointed, but CDPR’s current production priorities make that trade-off easy to understand.
