Why Does Cao Cao in Wo Long 2 Look Like Oda Nobunaga Again?

Wo Long 2: Blazing Phoenix made its debut during the Xbox showcase early yesterday, and the trailer marked Cao Cao's first official appearance. Player reaction quickly settled on one point: quite a few viewers thought this version of Cao Cao looked a lot like Oda Nobunaga.

That reaction isn't hard to understand if you've played Koei Tecmo's historical games before. The reason is simple: in many of the company's past titles, Cao Cao and Oda Nobunaga have long shared almost the same hairstyle and beard. Seen in that light, this feels less like a one-off issue in Wo Long 2: Blazing Phoenix and more like players recognizing Koei's long-running house style again.

At a glance, character design has to communicate identity clearly. When the hair, beard, and facial expression start to blur together, it's easy for players to read two famous figures as the same type at first glance. A short trailer only makes that overlap more obvious.

What matters here is less the model quality than whether the character is instantly recognizable. When players joke about Koei Tecmo giving Nobunaga and Cao Cao "the same face," the real complaint is that the studio still hasn't created enough visual distance between different historical figures. Another joke making the rounds, that "in Koei's worldview, Cao Cao equals Nobunaga," sounds like years of accumulated impressions boiled down into one punchline.

This kind of trailer debate has nothing to do with frame rate or resolution, but it still shapes first impressions. Even if the PC and console versions eventually diverge in technical performance, whether a character design lands still helps decide the first wave of trailer conversation. At the very least, Wo Long 2: Blazing Phoenix has already proved one thing: Cao Cao left an impression, even if that impression currently comes more from the lookalike joke than from the character himself.

That may not be a bad thing if Koei Tecmo releases more gameplay and story footage later. For a newly revealed game making its first appearance at the Xbox showcase early yesterday, having players remember Cao Cao is better than generating no conversation at all. But the studio would be wise to use future footage to create more separation between Cao Cao and Oda Nobunaga in presence, expression, and mannerisms, otherwise this gag will probably keep following Wo Long 2: Blazing Phoenix for a while.
