Xbox discs yellowing and unreadable due to irreversible polycarbonate degradation
An Xbox One X owner discovered their secondhand game disc wouldn't read—despite a nearly scratch-free surface, the disc's back showed visible yellowing.

That discoloration isn't dirt. Experts confirm yellowing indicates polycarbonate layer degradation: even without visible scratches, degraded material disrupts the laser's ability to read data. Worse, this damage is permanent and irreversible—no amount of cleaning or polishing will restore functionality.

The player attempted downloading the digital version and using the disc for license verification, but the system still reported no valid authorization. Disc aging typically results from prolonged sunlight exposure or high-humidity, high-temperature storage. If you maintain a physical game collection, inspect your storage conditions now to prevent similar failures.

Physical game collectors should verify disc condition before purchasing secondhand—yellowed discs are effectively unusable. For long-term preservation, sealed, light-free storage in stable temperature and low humidity is essential. Digital versions lack the tangible appeal, but they won't degrade into plastic waste a decade later.
