FINAL FANTASYGears of War E-Day Limited Controller Revealed, and Fans Have Thoughts
On August 12, Xbox officially revealed a limited-edition wireless controller themed around Gears of War: E-Day. The controller is priced at $89.99, while Xbox Design Lab will add matching Gears of War: E-Day customization options on September 30. The game itself is scheduled to launch on October 6.
For collectors, the real question is whether the design goes beyond a logo swap. This Gears of War: E-Day controller is clearly not just a Crimson Omen badge slapped onto a stock shell. Xbox says the body uses 3D molded textures and laser-etched detailing to evoke cracked asphalt, with red fissures running through the surface. The stronger idea is to treat the series iconography as texture, not just decoration.

The buttons include the sort of small detail collectors tend to notice. The ABXY cluster is mostly black, but the X button is finished in transparent red. It is a minor difference, and more a collector-facing flourish than a functional change. It will not alter how the controller feels in measurable terms, but it gives you one more small reason to notice it when you pick up the pad. That is where limited hardware usually lives: in small, repeated points of attention.

Still, $89.99 is not an impulse price for everyone. If your only plan is to play Gears of War: E-Day on launch day, a standard controller will do the job perfectly well. If you already collect limited editions, like the red-and-black industrial look, or want to build a themed setup through Design Lab, then September 30 is the date that actually matters.

The timing is also fairly typical for Xbox. By rolling out the limited controller and Design Lab options days before the October 6 release, the company puts Gears back in front of players before the game arrives. The only missed opportunity is depth. If Xbox later opens more buttons, sticks, and back-shell details to Design Lab users, this red-crack theme could feel less like a single limited collectible and more like a setup players can build out over time.
