Xbox's Next Console Codenamed Helix, Players Mock the Naming Choices

Microsoft's next-gen Xbox console, codenamed Helix, triggered a naming debate across Reddit and Twitter after the codename leaked to overseas communities on 6/5.

Xbox's naming convention has always been a mess. The jump from Xbox to Xbox 360, then Xbox One, and finally Series X/S follows no logic that average consumers can parse. When the Helix codename surfaced, players flooded comment sections with naming proposals: Xbox Helix, Xbox 720, Xbox Infinity, Xbox 6, Xbox 5—the list goes on.

The retro camp wants Microsoft to simply revert to "Xbox," mirroring the 2001 original's clean branding. It's a soft reboot that banks on nostalgia while cutting through the clutter. The numbers crowd pushes for Xbox 720, Xbox 6, or Xbox 5—at least consumers could tell which generation they're buying. The creative faction backs Xbox Helix or Xbox Infinity for their futuristic ring.

Microsoft's reluctance to use straightforward numbers stems from a fear that consumers will assume PlayStation 6 outperforms Xbox 5 based on digits alone. But this avoidance strategy backfired—Series X versus Series S confuses parents at retail counters who can't tell which model packs more power.

Players also pitched a practical idea: launch one standard model instead of splitting the lineup into X/S variants that create decision paralysis, then release a Pro version later when the tech matures. The approach would at least streamline the product hierarchy.

Sony's PlayStation naming is brutally simple—PS1 through PS5, no ambiguity. If Microsoft wants to compete next generation, fixing the naming mess comes first. Stop leaving shoppers bewildered in front of store shelves.
