Xbox Mode hits Win11 as Microsoft pushes console experience on PC
Microsoft rolled out Xbox mode to Windows 11 on May 1, bringing a controller-optimized fullscreen interface to PCs. Previously limited to preview builds, the feature is now hitting mainstream users in staged regional rollouts.

Rating this a 6 out of 10. It solves a problem that doesn't really exist. PC gamers want performance and flexibility, not a desktop disguised as a console. Four entry points—Win+G game bar, Settings menu, Xbox app, Win+F11 shortcut—suggests Microsoft isn't confident anyone will actually use this.
The multi-platform library integration across Xbox Game Pass, Steam, and Epic does have merit. Beats juggling three separate launchers. Controller navigation is smoother than the old Big Picture mode, credit where it's due.

The positioning is awkward. Couch gamers already own an Xbox Series or PS5. Most PC users stick with keyboard and mouse. This makes more sense for handheld PCs—ROG Ally, Steam Deck types might find it useful.
Microsoft is patching its hardware ecosystem. Xbox consoles trail Sony, so turn Windows into a quasi-console OS. The logic tracks, but will PC users bite? The staged regional rollout shows Microsoft's own hesitation to go all-in.

Worth trying if you own a handheld PC or frequently game on a TV. Desktop-only users can skip it—just another shortcut. And that "launch at startup" option? Don't enable it unless you enjoy exiting the mode every time you boot up to do actual work.
