Returning after 4 years! Is the Xiaomi Notebook Pro 14 worth buying?

Every time a thin-and-light laptop launch comes around, I first sweep through the specs like opening a map. I check the weight first, then the ports, and finally focus on cooling and battery life, because those are the areas most likely to reveal whether a machine is just putting on a show or is actually meant to be carried around for real. With the return of the Xiaomi Notebook Pro 14 this time, my first impression was like suddenly discovering a small road in a familiar part of town that had been closed for four years—it has finally reconnected to the main route.

This machine marks Xiaomi’s return after four years, and it was unveiled at the spring new product launch event alongside the new-generation SU7. It will officially go on sale at 10:00 on March 21. As for pricing, the official starting price is 8,499 yuan, with a 500-yuan discount during the initial sales period. Combined with the national subsidy, the starting price drops to as low as 6,799.15 yuan. Judging from this positioning alone, it is clearly not trying to compete on rock-bottom pricing, but is instead aimed at the thin-and-light premium segment.

Viewed from that angle, the most distinctive part of the Pro 14 is still its chassis design. It uses a one-piece die-cast magnesium alloy body, which Xiaomi says reduces weight by 30%. Together with a high-strength carbon fiber bottom cover, a titanium alloy keyboard support plate, and graphene aluminum alloy cooling fins, the whole machine comes in at 1.08kg with a thickness of 14.95mm. For people who regularly carry a laptop during their commute, this kind of difference is very tangible—it is not just a numbers game on paper. The color options are also more lively than many business laptops, with Mist Blue, Elegant Gray, Cream White, and the newly added Soft Pink.

But beyond appearances, the biggest fear with a thin-and-light laptop is still that it looks good but cannot really perform. This time, Xiaomi offers up to the 3rd Gen Intel Core Ultra X7 358H, based on the Panther Lake architecture and Intel 18A process. Paired with a 10000mm² VC cooling module, dual fans, and triple air channels, it can sustain performance output of up to 50W. For a 14-inch, 1.08kg machine, that figure is already far from conservative, and at the very least suggests it is not the kind of laptop that starts throttling and wheezing after opening a dozen browser tabs.

The display is also like a prime downtown plot on the map, with a complete set of specs. It features a 14.6-inch OLED professional true-color touchscreen, 3.1K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 1600nits peak brightness, and a 129cm² pressure-sensitive touchpad, making it well-suited for everyday office work, photo editing, and content consumption. OLED combined with high brightness is especially more comfortable than many standard thin-and-light laptops in outdoor or brightly lit environments.

Go a little further and you will find that this machine has not completely sacrificed expandability for thinness. It reserves an M.2 2280 SSD slot and supports up to 4TB of expansion. The ports include Thunderbolt 4, full-function USB-C, USB-A, HDMI 2.1 TMDS, and a 3.5mm audio jack. Quite a few thin-and-light laptops today are like maps with only a single highway—you still have to carry a pile of adapters when heading out. Xiaomi, at least this time, has left some side roads open.

Battery life is another key point. It has a built-in 72Wh battery, with Xiaomi claiming up to 19.8 hours of battery life, 12.4 hours of continuous video streaming, and 15.8 hours of online meetings, and it comes standard with a 100W GaN adapter. Official figures always need to be taken with a bit of caution, of course, but fitting a 72Wh battery into a 1.08kg body already shows that the trade-offs here were made quite aggressively.

If you ask for my buying advice, I would put it very directly: if you care about lightness, display, ports, and overall feel, this is one to pay close attention to; if you care more about pure performance-to-price ratio, it may not be the cheapest option. The Xiaomi Notebook Pro 14 is not about pushing one single spec to the extreme, but about connecting several key points on the thin-and-light laptop map into a more complete whole. For people who dislike obvious shortcomings, this kind of machine is often more durable and feels more like a piece of gear that can accompany you on long-term exploration.
